What the ECS is all about:
The Early Career Symposium is an important part of any serious conference, FOIS is no different. The ECS allows young researchers to showcase their ideas, their results and to network with more experienced researchers in the field.
In order to join, you are ask to write a 2-page summary (excluding references) of the research you are conducting during your PhD or your Master project (find the template here: ECS_FOIS2018) and send it in together with your CV. Your summary will be reviewed by experienced researchers in your field and in order to get a wide variety of different research topics the 10 highest ranking students will be invited to participate at the Early Career Symposium. What to expect during FOIS:
During FOIS you will be asked to hold a 5 minute speed-talk followed by a longer “Student-lounge” where you will present a poster on your research. Here all the conference participants are encourage to take an interest in the students’ research by asking questions and offer guidance.
In addition, more focused attention will be given through the mentor program. This means that you will be assigned a senior researcher working on similar topics that will take an extra interest in discussing your work, your future career and whatever the two of you feel interested in. The highlight of the mentor program is a lunch break where you will be seated together with your mentor to discuss your work.

Extra Curricular Activities:
To bond as the “upcoming generation” we have arranged for a joint dinner at Africa cafe on the eve of the 19th. All students are invited to join for R350 (ca. 20 euro) all you can eat dinner. Afterwards those who want can stay for a drink or two and let the evening take us where it wants to!

Affordable Accommodation:
There is limited accommodation available at the University of Cape Town. The different types of rooms in the University of Cape Town’s guest accommodation, i.e., All Africa House, range between R575- R900 per night. There is a free University Hiddigh Shuttle between UCT and Cape Town’s central business district + Mycity to the V&A waterfront (or walk 20minutes). Or you can take the GA bus (R8.60 from lower campus to the city centre) + Mycity to the V&A waterfront (see FOIS Venue page for details)
